Open source

Gryffi Community Edition: run it on your own server, for free

The Community Edition is the full Gryffi for one organization, on a server you manage. It is open source under the AGPL-3.0 license and has no limits on journeys, end users or makers. You connect your own AI provider and your own mail server. Your data stays on your server, apart from what you send to that AI provider.

Install on Ubuntu or Debian with one command

curl -fsSL https://get.gryffi.com | sudo bash

The script checks your server and shows what it will do before it changes anything.

Erik Griffioen, founder of Gryffi

Why I made Gryffi open source

I have worked as a system administrator since 2000, twenty years of it in government. Wherever I could, I chose open source software. Price was rarely the reason. With open source you can see what runs on your servers, fix it yourself and keep using it when a supplier changes course.

I want the same for Gryffi. If you have a server and some Linux knowledge, you can run Gryffi yourself without paying me anything. If you are a developer, you can read the code, change it and send improvements back.

Would you rather not manage a server? Then Gryffi Cloud does that for you. Both come from the same code.

What you need

A small Linux server is enough. The setup wizard tests your AI provider and mail server before it saves anything.

A Linux server

Ubuntu 22.04 or newer, or Debian 12 or newer, on amd64 or arm64. With 2 GB of memory and 20 GB of free disk.

A domain name

For example gryffi.example.com, pointing to your server. Gryffi gets its own HTTPS certificate from Let's Encrypt.

A mail server

Gryffi sends invitations and magic links through an SMTP server you choose, such as the one from your mail provider.

An AI provider (optional)

Any service with an OpenAI-compatible API: Mistral, OpenAI, OpenRouter, or a model on your own hardware with Ollama, vLLM or LM Studio.

Document reading (optional)

For AI guides that read PDF, Word and PowerPoint files: 4 GB of memory and 30 GB of disk, on amd64.

Basic Linux skills

You run the install script, point a domain name to the server and install an update now and then.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Community Edition really free?

Yes. You pay Gryffi nothing. You do pay for your own server, and your AI provider charges you for what Gryffi uses. To keep those costs in hand, you can set a maximum number of AI questions per month.

Are there limits on users or journeys?

No. Journeys, AI guides, end users and makers are unlimited. One installation is for one organization.

What do I miss compared to Gryffi Cloud?

Nothing in the product itself. All seven step types are there, and so are AI guides, Copy & Translate, sync with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, public journeys, the API and analytics. The difference is who does the work: with the Community Edition you manage the server, the updates and the AI provider yourself.

What does the AGPL-3.0 license mean for me?

You can use Gryffi for free, also in a company, and you can read, change and share the code. One rule: if you change Gryffi and let other people use your version over a network, you publish your changes under the same license.

Which AI can I use?

Any service with an OpenAI-compatible API, such as Mistral, OpenAI or OpenRouter. You can also run a model on your own hardware with Ollama, vLLM or LM Studio, so no data leaves your network. Or leave AI off: journeys, quizzes, forms and analytics work without it.

Why do I need my own mail server?

End users log in with a magic link from an email, and makers get invitations and notifications by email. In the Community Edition, Gryffi sends those through an SMTP server you choose. That can be your own server or the SMTP service of your mail provider.

How do updates and backups work?

The install script adds the gryffi command to your server. gryffi update makes a backup first and goes back to the previous version if the new one does not start. Every night, a backup is made of the database and the uploaded files.

Where can I get help?

In the documentation and in GitHub Discussions. Found a bug? Report it as an issue on GitHub. Security problems you report privately, as SECURITY.md explains.
